Background: Gilbert Blythe was brought up in Avonlea P.E.I all his life and was a popular child. He was a bit of a teaser in his school days and constantly picked on the girls. When a small red-headed girl came to Avonlea when he was 14 years old, he immediately had a crush of her and wanted to get her attention. But he went the completely wrong way about it. After his "Carrots" remark, Anne smashed his slate over his head and vowed never to speak to him again. Gilbert began to fall in love with Anne even though she completely snubbed him. Eventually, after years of snubbing and rivalry in school, the pair became close friends and fell in love.
