Background: Matthew Cuthbert and his sister, Marilla, owned Green Gables and took
in Anne as a young child. Matthew was a sweet, gentle man of 60 who was a confirmed bachelor. He was extremely shy, if not
actually afraid, of women and kept very much to himself. Anne enchanted Matthew and opened him up from the self-effacing farmer
he had always been, by helping him realize the joy in life.
Matthew's quiet unassuming manner was a foil for Marilla's stern child rearing
techniques. His love for Anne became deep and profound as he grew into the role of her adopted father. His death was a milestone
in Anne's coming of age.
